Slocumb, with John Howell, aprivate in his band, Henry Williams, and the brother of Mrs. Slo-cumb, Charles Hooks, a boy about thirteen years of age, was leadinga hot pursuit of the Tory captain who had been sent to reconnoitrethe country, and some of his routed troops. These were first dis-cerned in the open grounds east and northeast of the plantation, closely pursued by a body of American mounted militia; while arunning fight was kept up with different weapons, in which four orfive broad swords gleamed conspicuous. The foremost of the pur-suing party appeared too busy with the Tories to see anything else;and they entered the avenue at the same moment with the partypursued. With what horror and consternation did Mrs. Slocumbrecognized her husband, her brother and two of her neighbors, inchase of the Tory captain and four of his Tory band, already halfway down the avenue, and unconscious that they were rushing intothe enemys midst.
