These examinations are not under the control of theCivil Service Commission, but are conducted by aboard of Examiners who are officials of the State Department. The applicantmust secure the consent of the President of the United States before being permittedto take the examination. It is practically a method of making a selectionfrom a number ot applicants on the basis of merit. Examinations will notbe held on any regular dates, but as required. TheInternalRevenue Examinations forthe classified Internal Revenue Setvice are now held THE INT^ Service ^° ^^^ positions ot deputy coUectoi,clerk, gauger, storekeeper, storekeepeiand gauger combined, and messengeiApplicants are examined as to thenrelative capacity and fitness. There isbut one grade of examination, viz.: C L E R K—S TOREKEEPER—GAUGER, the subjects of which areSpelling, Arithmetic, Penmanship,Copying, Letter Writing and Elementary Physics pertaining to gauging(This last subject is one on whichevery applicant should have somespecial instruction.
