Caption: Ser'xu, Sichuan, China - Aug 2002. An ethnic Khampa horseman wearing the unique dress of his clan. He waits to ride in the opening ceremony of the Ser'xu Horseracing Festival in eastern horse racing festival originated from the great clan gatherings in ancient Tibet. Clans formerly fought over who has the fastest horse and the most land. The horse racing festivals were banned during China's cultural revolution, but are once again the most important event on the Khampa under the strict control of the Chinese military (and frequented by camera toting tourists) some Khampas feel that the annual event is beginning to represent more of a party rather than a warrior convention.
