The latter was agreat natural philosopher who did much good workin his department of thought, but being a Tory inthe Revolutionary period, he had to leave the coun-try and was almost lost sight of. Of these latter-day scientists, Benjamin Silliman (1779-1864) isbest known as the founder of Sillimans Journal ofScience anil Art. lie was professor of chemistry,mineralogy and geology in Yale College from 1804. LOUIS AGASSIZ. first term. In diplomacy to 1855. Edward Hitchcock was born in 1793 anddied in 1864. He was professor of geology in Am-herst College for many years, and later President ofthat institution. He was among the greatest geol-ogists of his day. Louis Agassiz was a native ofSwitzerland, born in 1807. He came to this coun-try in his early manhood and became connected withHarvard College. Zoology was the branch of sci-ence to which his life was devoted. He died in1873. James D. Dana, born in 1813, ranks veryhigh as a geologist and mineralogist. His writingsgave him a high reputation among scientists. Winchell, born in 1824. may be said tohave brought geol-ogy down to venerable Pro-fessor Asa Gray, ofHarvard College,has long ranked asthe foremost botan-ist in America.
