On the platform,at the left, stands an old soldierwhose white beard ami vener-able face contrast with thehearty content of the man whose. hands are in the pockets of hisconspicuously checked the other end, on the steps, isa wounded officer painfully mak-ing his way with the aid of twocanes. Grouped by the doorwaystand some mothers, wives, andsweethearts, dressed in the an-cient poke-bonnets and rustlingcrinoline of fifty years ago. Somepnems in this chapter expressphases of the anguish that cameto many a fond heart in thosefour endless years. But thewomen in the picture are morefortunate than most. They caDgo to the front to be with thewounded son or brother. Thou-sands had to wait on the hillsidefarm, or in the cabin on theprairie, or near the cottage bythe live-oaks, while weeks andmonths of dread uncertaintybrought no solace to eyes thatwatched through the darknessand hearts that suffered on insilence until the news arrived.
