Satellite picture of the United States of America and Canada formed by a mosaic of images made by Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) equipment onboard a NOAA satellite. The picture covers an area stretching from the West Indies at bottom right to Greenland at upper right and the eastern most tip of Siberia, USSR, at upper left. The light blue area, also at upper left, is the permanent pack ice which covers the Arctic Ocean. The NOAA satellites follow polar orbits and provide information for weather forecasting, snow and ice monitoring and sea surface temperature measurement.
