The exhibitionhad a great success. Partisans were confirmed in their admira-tion, and their numbers were increased by the conversion of formeropponents and of those who had hitherto remained indifferent, towhom this exhibition came as a startling revelation. The exhibition at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts was followed bythe sale by his widow of the studio and the works which Manethad left. It took place at the Hotel Drouot on the 4th and5th of February 1884. It aroused great curiosity; speculationwas rife as to what would be the result. In view of the dis-favour with which wealthy collectors and connoisseurs had alwaysregarded Manets works, many doubted whether they would. IN 1909 195 succeed in finding purchasers. Thus there was a great feelingof uncertainty at the opening of the sale, but it at once becameevident that it was going to be a success. All the works weresold, and among the buyers were many new collectors, whoseinterest in Manet had not previously been suspected, thus in-creasing the number of those who were already known as hissupporters. Among others, seven pictures were sold which hadappeared in the Salon : Le Bar aux Folies-Bergere, which realised5800 francs; Chez le Pere Lathuile, 5000 francs; La Lecon demusique, 4400 francs; Le Balcon, 3000 francs; Portrait de , 3000 francs. Le Liuge was sold for 8000 francs, theOhjmpia was withdrawn at 10,000, and the Argenteuil at 12, as these prices appear to-day, they nevertheless createdgreat astonishment at the time. The total realised was 116,637francs. The success
