Anglo-Saxon church-builder, St Cuthman or Cuthmann, embraces his ageing, paralysed mother and the ’Shipley Windmill’, once owned by Franco-English writer and historian Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) and later the fictional home of TV sleuth Jonathan Creek. A 1920s stained glass window in the Parish Church of Saint Mary the Virgin at Shipley, West Sussex, England. The window was designed in late Arts and Crafts or Gothic Revival style by Florence Camm (1874 - 1960), co-director of a firm of West Midlands glassmakers founded by her father.
Shipley, West Sussex, England, UK: the 'Shipley Windmill’ in 1920s stained glass designed and made by Florence Camm for a south aisle memorial window in the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin. The white-painted four-storey smock mill, also known as the King's Mill or Vincent's Mill, is a well-known Sussex landmark built in 1879 at Shipley, a village near Horsham. Roman Catholic writer Hilaire Belloc bought it together with other property in 1906 and more recently, it has featured as the fictional home of the detective Jonathan Creek in the long-running BBC TV mystery crime drama series of the same name. Florence Camm, co-director of a respected family firm of West Midlands glassmakers, designed the memorial window to Etheldreda, Lady Burrell (1853-1922) in late Arts and Crafts or Gothic Revival style. Apart from the windmill, it features a depiction of the Annunciation of St Mary and of the Anglo-Saxon saint Cuthman or Cuthmann embracing his ageing mother. Florence Camm (1874-1960) was the daughter of Thomas William Camm (1839-1912), who established himself as a glassmaker at Smethwick around 1865. By the 1920s, she was running the business with her brother, Walter Herbert Camm (1881-1967). They both trained at the Birmingham Municipal School of Art and Florence became the dominant artist in the business, designing glass on her own account and often painting it herself.
