For years the wary principals in the Wilkes gang succeededin avoiding conviction, if not arrest, and, during their career,swindled bankers, brokers and other business men to anenormous extent, in the aggregate, with their counterfeit banknotes, bonds, income certificates, bills of exchange and forgeddrafts. Engle, Becker and Brockway were the chief oper-ators in the production of the counterfeits with graving tools.
