Tagging burrowing owls in California. Biologist Noelle Ronan gently placing burrowing owl back into burrow after tagging. Burrowing owls in southern California have declined due to loss of habitat and rising development pressures. When burrowing owls reside on areas where development will occur, we work with our conservation partners to encourage the owls to leave, or actively move them to a new site. We are working to evaluate which tactic burrowing owls respond best to, so we can best help the species thrive.
