Probably hewas frequently swayed to and fro, with muchdifficulty in finally deciding. The advisers of theyoung king evidently felt that the enormous popu-larity of the archbishop, wherever he went amongstthe Anglo-Saxon people, threatened a possiblerising against the Normans, for in ordering hisreturn to Canterbury, they forbade him to lingerin towns.
