I regret myinability to carr)- out your instructions. The cavalry engagement of the 12th was by far the mostbrilliant one of the present cami>aign. The enemys loss wasvery lieavy. They lost the following-named officers in killedand wounded: Colonel McAllister, commanding regiment, killed; Brigadier-General Rosser, commanding brigade, wounded; Colonel Aiken, ccjmmanding regiment, wounded;Colonel Custer, connnanding regiment, wounded. My loss inkilled and wounded will be about 575. I captured and havenow with me 370 prisoners of war. including 20 commissionedofificers. My loss in cai:)turcd will not exceed 160. These. ??^.., *.-
