Sunflower plant in front of white shuttered window

portrait format of Helianthus coarse leaved giant yellow sunflower and leafed stem and one unopened flower head with part of a white shuttered window of a bungalow in the background. This coarse leafed giant can be sown in April about 1 inch or 25 mm deep, but they will flower earlier if sown under glass for planting out in the spring. Tall varieties like this one must be staked. This one was over 6 feet tall and without a tall sturdy tripod like my large Benbo and a step ladder this shot sould have been very difficult without cutting it down first. It is a perennial and grows well on clay/chalk soil, although they respond well to occasional feeding. The flower heads are about 1 ft (300mm) across, and they can grow up to about 10 ft (3m) tall. This one was taken in early september 2005.
