Tournus Saone et Loire Burgundy France
Tournus is a beautiful little town situated on the banks of the Saone Burgundy. It features the old abbey church of St Philibert one of the earliest and most important Romanesque buildings in Burgundy founded by a group of monks from Noirmoutier driven from their island by invading Normans in the 9th Century. Constructed around 900AD the facade of the church has features more associated with a fortress. The high chapel that looks down on the church follows the Carolingian tradition of church building doubling as a defensive feature.
