Three African American soldiers from the 317th Engineers, 1st Army, can be seen digging a hole in the foreground of the image. The photograph was taken on October 25, 1918, one mile north of Varennes, on the way to Montblainville, Meuse, France. The deteriorated roads were not repaired by the Germans for three years, resulting in frequent breakdowns under heavy traffic. The image was released by the censor on December 23, 1918.
