It will astonish most city people to hear thatred children are very like white children, just as alady who was out on the plains a few years ago. was astonished to find that they had skins assmooth and soft as any ladys—no, smoother andsofter than that: as delicate and lovely as anydear little babys here in New York. This ladywas visiting the Blackfeet in my company, andshe was so surprised, when she happened totouch one little red boys bare arm, that shewent about pinching a dozen chubby-faced boysand girls to make herself sure that all their skinswere like the coats of ripe peaches to the touch. Whether the Indians really love their chil-dren, or know what genuine love or affec-tion is, I cannot say; but they are so proudand careful of their little ones that it amountsto the same thing so far as the youngstersare concerned. Boy babies are always mosthighly prized, because they will grow up intowarriors. The little that is taught to Indian boys mustseem to them much more like fun than instruc-tion.
