Pay Cottage, one of the houses for workers at the Ashburnham ironworks. Pay cottage was occupied by the manager and he paid the wages from here. The cottage has a small window in the porch area from where the men were paid. At the time the furnace was working there were probably more cottages on the site. Pay Cottage is a grade 2 listed furnace closed in 1813 and was the last working furnace in the country. Cannons were originally forged at this site, making it an important place in the Sussex Weald's iron industry.
