Havana is based around the largest natural port in the Caribbean. It was founded in 1519 and became the capital of Cuba in 1558. It grew rapidly as a major Spanish port in the New World despite attacks by pirates. Havana Viejo or Old Havana is full of narrow streets, colonial buildings and mansions, cobblestone squares ,old churches and sixteenth century forts The Ambos Mundos hotel built in the 1920s was the haunt of Ernest Hemingway and has a well known roof top terrace bar
