After several months of constant rise in the price of electricity, social and environmental groups and entities have come out this Thursday, October 28, to the first large demonstration in Madrid against electricity companies and to demand that the Government assume its responsibility and set the prices of electricity and gas. The demonstration has left from the Plaza de la Villa de Madrid with the aim of denouncing the rise in electricity and gas prices, which they blame on the electricity companies, and demand a progressive rate based on household income as well as an energy pricing system. Among the organizers are Ecologists in Action, Alliance against Energy Poverty, Greenpeace, Fridays for Future Madrid, Friends of the Earth, Yayoflautas Madrid, CGT, Anticapitalistas and the tenant unions of Catalonia and Madrid. In the manifesto, the organizers demand that the Government of Pedro Sánchez fulfill its promises and commitments and oblige the electricity companies to consult social services about the situation of the families before cutting off electricity, water or gas and they are guarantee supply while they are in a vulnerable situation and for as long as necessary. They also criticize that the minimum vital electricity approved by the Government only affects the electricity supply (not the other essential supplies) and limits the prohibition of cuts to a period of 10 months, without addressing the situation of the people after that time . The text calls for a progressive rate based on household income and adapted to the particular needs of the most vulnerable people, as they consider that measures such as the social bonus are "patches" that do not protect all those who suffer from energy poverty .
