Liver in kwashiorkor. Light micrograph of a section through liver tissue from a patient affected by kwashiorkor, showing fat infiltrates (white). Kwashiorkor is a form of severe malnutrition characterised by oedema (fluid accumulation) leading to swelling of the belly. It also causes an enlarged fatty liver (as here), hairloss, loss of teeth and dermatitis.
