The Old Royal Naval College and Bellot monument, Greenwich, southeast London

"Formerly constructed to serve as a hospital for the relief and support of seamen, the Royal Navy took residence in 1873 and it became known as the Royal Navy College. In 1998 the Royal Navy left Greenwich and handed over responsibility for the site to the Greenwich foundation. Shortly afterwards, in 1999, the University of Greenwich moved in and were later joined by theTrinity College of Music in 2001. Standing to the left of the picture is the Bellot memorial, designed by Philip Hardwick. This granite obelisk commemorates the young French exporer, Joseph-Rene Bellot (1826-1853), who drowned after falling through ice in the Wellington Channel whilst searching for the lost 1845 Arctic expedition of Sir John Franklin".
