Sapas Mons, Venus. Computer-generated perspective view of Sapas Mons, a large volcano on the planet Venus. The summit of Sapas Mons is the bright feature in the foreground. This volcano is about 400 kilometres wide and rises kilometres above the surrounding terrain. In the distance is Maat Mons, the largest Venusian shield volcano. This image was derived from radar data gathered by the Magellan spacecraft. The perspective view has an exaggerated vertical scale to emphasise surface features, with colours added to reflect the basaltic rocks of the surface. The cloud cover and atmospheric haze are computer generated.
