River Amudarya. Aerial view of the River Amudarya which flows into the Aral Sea. The Amudarya is one of central Asia's largest rivers, being about 2495 kilometres long. In its lower reaches the climate is arid, with an average annual rainfall of less than 100 millimetres. This has led to water being taken from the Amudarya and another large river that flows into the Aral, the Syrdarya. The use of water for irrigation has reduced the flow of these two rivers, damaging their wildlife and causing the Aral Sea to shrink rapidly. So much water was taken that during the 1980s there were several years when little or no water reached the Aral Sea from the Amudarya. Photographed in Uzbekistan.
