Holašovice, South Bohemia, Czech Republic or Czechia: pointed gables of farmsteads reflected in still water of pond on village green. Image rotated by 180 degrees. Holašovice is a well-preserved example of a traditional Central European village with a ground plan dating from the Middle Ages. It was transformed in the 1800s when the local rural class escaped servitude and farmers could afford to rebuild their houses in the flamboyant style of South Bohemian Folk Baroque, also known as Rural Baroque, Rustic Baroque or Peasants’ Baroque. The village includes 23 large farmsteads around a village green, together with several much smaller houses, in the South Bohemian Folk Baroque style. Almost always the stucco decoration features the date the house was built and sometimes the owner’s initials and profession. Holašovice is first mentioned in a decree of King Václav II in 1292, when it became the property of the Cistercian Vyšší Brod monastery 40 miles to the south. Between 1520 and 1525 most of the inhabitants died from bubonic plague and the monastery repopulated the village with settlers from Bavaria and Austria. In the 1800s, wooden structures were replaced by solid masonry and finished in the Folk Baroque style. Holašovice master-builders were inspired by and replicated the decoration of manorial buildings in Bohemia and Austria. In the 1990s, the village was restored and repopulated and in 1997 Holašovice was included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
