Windsor County Bethel, on the White River, has a well-endowed publicscliool; it has leather manufactories and large granite indus-tries. Chester, on the Williams River, has soapstone quarriesand manufactories. Important Towns and Cities 87 Hartford lies on the Quechee, White and Connecti-cut Rivers, and contains four thriving villages, of which themost widely known is White River Junction, an importantrailroad center, near w^hich are the State fair , by Olcott Falls in the Connecticut, is of impor-tance, because of valuable water White River Junction, Town of Hartford, Windsor County Ludloiu, on the Black River, has large manufacturinginterests. Rochester, at the terminus of the White River Railroad,is rapidly developing as a manufacturing town. South Royalton, on the White River, is the railroad cen-ter for several towns and is engaged somewhat in the manu-facture of shoes. Springfield, on the Black River, has had a rapid industrialgrowth during recent years, and is one of the most thrivingand important manufacturing towns in the State. Windsor contains the Vermont State Prison and a UnitedStates Court House, and has a large plant for the manufac-ture of tools. It was here that the first constitution of Ver- 88 Geograihy of Vermont
