Theirextreme left occupied the crest of a steep cliff, on which General Hardee had plantedsome batteries which commanded the deep, wide valley in their front, across the creek. Finding, however, that a portion of their line was exposed to an enfilading fire fromthe Federal batteries on the opposite hills, and, the Federal right having been extendedtill it turned Hardees flank, the Confederates, after obstinate fighting during the i8th, in ^^. THE RIFLE-PITS BEFORE , 1S64. which Woods and Newtons divisions of Howards corps captured and held a portion oftheir outer works, retired to another position, which included the crest of KennesawMountain, thence running to its western end, and, from this, southward some three Johnston says of this movement: Another position, including the crest of Kennesaw, was chosen on the 17th, and prepared foroccupation under the direction of Colonel Prestman.
