The 'Great Wheel' Josiah Wedgwood used to throw pottery on display at the Potteries Museum, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs, England, UK
The Great Wheel, used to throw pottery, introduced in the early 18th century. It allowed the thrower to concentrate on shaping wares as it was powered by an assistant. The Great Wheel was used by Josiah Wedgwood to throw The First Day's Vases. Consequently his weakened right leg, caused by childhood smallpox, did not prevent him working as a thrower.
