Aftergraduation he went into business with his father. Hisconstant studies, however, seemed to turn his steps nat-urally toward a higher institution of learning, with theresult that in 1S66 he went to the Andover (Massachu-setts) Theological Seminary, where he was graduateSm 1869. His first pastorate was in Edinburg, Ohio. In1871 he went to the Spring Street CongregationalChurch in Milwaukee, Wis., where he remained tillcalled to the professorship of philosophy at Bowdoin.
