Per-ceval, from the board of the same designer, was agood second. lernia, a Fife boat, owned byMr. H. R. Langrishe, and Quinque, designedby her owner. Col. J. T. Bucknill, were lesssuccessful. In the 2|-rating class The Babe still heldthe sway, winning no less than 36 first prizes. the old type of craft built under the Thamesand 1730 Tonnage rules. The characteristicsof the new boats were extreme quickness instays, handiness and power of thrashing towindward in broken water. Changes weremade in the rig as well as in the design ofracing craft, and by the season of 1891 almostall boats had adopted the standing lug in placeof the gaff mainsail. There being no tax on beam under theLength and Sail Area form of measurement, theboats were treated to a liberal amount of years experience of the rule made it mani-fest that by reducing displacement as much as out of 45 starts, although several new boats com-peted with her.
