Coma-Virgo galaxy cluster. True-colour optical image of the core of the Coma-Virgo cluster of galaxies, lying in the constellation Virgo. The bright elliptical galaxies are M86 (NGC 4406, centre), and M84 (NGC 4374, centre right). Above M86 is the spiral NGC 4402. Below M86 are NGC 4425 (lower left), NGC 4413 (lower centre) and NGC 4388 (lower right). These three are spiral galaxies. At upper left are NGC 4435, and just below it NGC 4438. The Coma-Virgo cluster is one of the nearest large clusters of galaxies, lying between 20 and 70 million light years away. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light.
