Bosco Fontana, Marmirolo, Mantua, Lombardy, Italy. Gonzaga's hunting lodge (16th century), built by the Duke of Mantua Vincenzo I Gonzaga.

In the center of the Bosco della Fontana (Fountain Wood) stands a seventeenth-century building, with the appearance of a castle, designed by the architect Giuseppe Dattaro, built by Vincenzo I Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, to use it as a "hunting house". In 1921, it was declared a national monument. The first historical references that mention Bosco Fontana date back to the fourteenth century. Between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the Gonzaga family, future lords of Mantua, came into possession of a vast estate in north-west of Mantua; it was covered by a vast dense forest rich in game and was transformed into a large hunting reserve. The Gonzagas are responsible for the primary initiative of those protectionist constraints that have brought us to this intact natural corner of the Po Valley through the thousand and one vicissitudes that have taken place over the centuries. Even if it is a biotope with very specific characteristics of planiziary forest, Bosco Fontana has some microsystems inside that enrich its environmental characteristics and increase its botanical diversity.
