Clarkson Stanfield was a native of Sunderland, in the county ofDurham; he was born, we believe, in 1798. The fact of his boyhood havingbeen passed in a seaport town, where everybody, as well as ever3^thing, is, orseems to be, impregnated with sea air and salt water, had, no doubt, consi-derable influence in determining him to enter the marine service, in whichhe passed several years of his early life, and thereby acquired a partialityfor the class of Art which he has since so su
