Franz Karl Achard (1753-1821), German chemist and physicist. Achard studied a wide range of topics, including meteorology, electricity and telegraphy, but is most remembered for his work on sugar refining. He was elected to the Royal Academy of Sciences at Berlin (1776) where he became director of the physics section. He was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (1782). His work on sugar beet refining reached an industrial scale when he opened his first refinery in 1801, with the technology spreading to other countries over the following decades. This engraving, dating from 1800, is by Bollinger.
