His principalspeech was an eloquent and appropriate eulogy on his deceased col-league, Hon. Lash was born August 18, 1810, in Be than ia County,North Carolina, where his ancestors settled about the middle of thelast century. Ilis opportunities for early education were few, andclosed when at fifteen he left school to engage in labor on his fathersfarm. At the age of twenty he embarked in mercantile pursuits, inwhich he was remarkably successful.
