It is a foolish, feeblo sort of aflame, you may say, but it is so hot that scarcelyany common flame gives out so much heat. Itgoes on burning regularly, and I am now aboutto put that flame to burn under a certain ar-rangement, in order that we may examine itsresults, and make use of the information whichwe may thereby acquire. Inasmuch as thecandle produces water, and this gas comes outof the water, let us see what this gives us bythe same process of combustion that the candlewent through when it burnt in the atmosphere, and for that purpose I am going to put thelamp under this apparatus, in order to condense. In the course of a short time you will see LIGHTNESS OF HYDEOGEN. 79 moisture appearing in the cylinder, and youwill get tlie water running down the side, andthe water from this hydrogen flame will haveabsolutely the same effect upon all our tests, being obtained by the same general process asin the former case. This hydrogen is a verybeautiful substance. It is so light that itcarries things up; it is far lighter than theatmosphere, and I dare say I can show you thisby an experiment which, if you are very clever, some of you may even have skill enough to re-peat. Here is our generator of hydrogen, andhere are some soap-suds. I have an indiarubber tube connected with the hydrogen gene-rator, and at the end of the tube is a tobaccopipe. I can thus put the pipe into the sudsand blow bubbles by means of the
