Genadendal was the first mission station in southern Africa. It was founded by Georg Schmidt, a German missionary of the Moravian Church in 1738 in what was then called Baviaans Kloof (Ravine of the Baboons) in the Riviersonderend Valley. The purpose of the station was to evangelise among the native Khoi population.
