Fortunately the tide of warswept past the City without doing any damage to lifeor property and without seriously arresting the workof the pioneers, who during the first two or threedecades laid the foundation of the prosperity whwhthe City has since exiierienced. GROWTH OF POPULATION. In l>i41 the population was estimated to be 1,500persons, but by 185b it had reached 6,283, and in 1864the inhabitants numbered 12,423.
