Round Kangchenjunga; a narrative of mountain travel and exploration . dfills the space between the crags at the head of theTumrachen Valley and the peak in the Nepalese watershedmarked 22,700 feet in the two-inch map, and called by usthe Langpo Peak. This plateau is divided by flat-toppedridges into several hollows ; the southernmost of these wasonce the feeding-ground of the great extinct glacier, themoraines of which block Lhonak above our Gora Chu camp. Owing no doubt to a much-needed, but too partial, improvement in the climate, and a consequent raising ofthe snow-level, the neve that used to occupy this basin hasdisappeared, taking its glacier with it. The whole ofLhonak bears evidence of the retreat of the glaciers ; theregion is a magnificent specimen of an ice-modelled countrywhich has been very little altered by sub-aerial denudation. Beyond this glittering plain we recognised on ourextreme left the sharp spire of Siniolchum, the three tipsof Simvu, and then, about 18 miles distant, the statelyform of Kangchenjunga. For the first time we saw its. LHONAK 147 Nepalese shoulder, where a Grand Plateau of neve, stretching under the highest ridge, is borne up at itswestern extremity by a low pointed peak, hardly to becounted as an independent summit. In front of Kang-chenjunga, between us and it, below its profile but hidingpart of its slopes, rose the Twins and the Tent Peak ofMr. Garwoods map. From our station the 23,350 feet peak, the Pyramid, was half hidden. The next conspicuous object was theLangpo Peak, a Breithorn with a Little Matterhorn on itsflank. Right in front of it appeared a very elegant summit,a Grivola (the Alpine traveller may thank me, and thegeneral reader must excuse me, for these frequent com-parisons), turning towards us most delicately ribbed andfluted snow-clifls. Then the white skyline fell in a great curve, almosta half-circle, before rising again to another broad steep-sided snow-peak (24,340 feet), beyond which the mass ofglaciers at
