Alongside the larger ves-sel lies a barge with a man in the end of it,who seems to be hailing a rowboat, containing aseated and a standing figure. Against a background of bright green mountain,which is succeeded by another of violet green hue, areddish-brown donkey, of Spanish breed, standsthree-quarters in view, facing away from the spec-tator. The beasts head is free of gear; but on itsback is a rosy scarlet saddle, furnished front andrear with a padded roll. Stirrup irons hang from itand a red strap passes round the quarters underthe tail. Over the root of the latter lies an orna-ment, composed of scarlet string and fringe. Thehead is seen against a shaded hollow in the moun-tains side. Stamped on the back, Vexte Rosa at the lower right, Rosa Bonheur.
