Skara Brae on Orkney's mainland is regarded by many as the most remarkable monument in Europe. This ancient village dates from around 3200 BC making it the oldest village in Europe. It was revealed by a great storm in 1850. It consists of eight houses that were extremely well preserved by it sand dune covering that kept it hidden for around 40 centuries.
