The nunneries located throughout Myanmar provide an excellent education in Buddhist tradition to young girls. Sometimes the trainee nuns are orphans, or have been entrusted to the convent by a single parent who cannot cope, but nowadays there is a trend toward teenagers shaving their heads and becoming temporary nuns, as it is seen as a meritorious undertaking that can bring advantages to them. Parents are happy to send their teenage girls to renowned nunneries such as this one, as it is seen as a safe single sex environment where they can learn the prayers and religious etiquette of the Buddhist religion. These girls were busy studying in one of the courtyards.
