In 1978 Greater Manchester Council purchased the earliest part of the former Liverpool Road Railway Station, which has closed in 1975, from British Rail. The Council paid a nominal sum of £1 for the site. The Manchester Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) located to the site in 1983. The Great Western Warehouse is the main entrance to the museum. The building marked the final extension of the 19th century Liverpool Road Station site.
