. After earthquake and fire . far as Point Arena, 100 miles northwest of San the south the same fault, or one belonging to thesame zone, is said to be traceable almost to the Gulf of Cali-fornia, and in parts of southern California, is locally knownas the earthquake crack. The San Andreas fault, which, asmay be seen from the small relief map, is followed by arectilinear ravine occupied by a chain of ponds and lakeletswhose existence is proof of recent disturbance. The third,or Pilarcitos, fault has not impressed its presence upon thetopography of the peninsula in so conspicuous a manner asthe other two. It is highly probable that future careful workwill discover other great faults generally parallel with thosementioned. There is a strong suggestion, for example, of afault passing near San Jose, along the eastern margin of thebay (see page 19), through Santa Rosa, and northwestwardalong the valley of the Russian river past Ukiah.* Abstract from the current issue of the National Geographic
