Girolamo Mercuriale, Italian Physician and Philologist

Girolamo Mercuriale (1530-1606) was an Italian philologist and physician. Philology is the study of language in written historical sources; it is a combination of literary studies, history and linguistics. His studies of the attitudes of the ancients toward diet, exercise and hygiene and the use of natural methods for the cure of disease culminated in the publication of his De Arte Gymnastica. It is considered the first book on sports medicine.
