It was begun in the year 1784,and finished in four years, being erected from a design of Bonomi, anarchitect of very great merit, and from its numerous and well arrangedapartments, may justly be considered one of the finest and most com-modious seats in this part of Sussex. As this Manor, which now comprises the whole of the Parish ofMadehurst, is not specified in the Domesday Survey, it probably formedpart of Arundel forest at that period, and afterwards obtained parochialrights. Upon an inquisition made in the reign of Edward I., upon thedeath of Richard, Earl of Arundel, this Estate was found to have be-longed to him. In the reign
