Some confusion is apparent among the authors who havetreated upon the tree, with respect to its name ; hence the dif-ferent appellations by which it has been described. The termWinterana Aromatica was bestowed by Linnaeus, in commemo-ration of its discoverer; in so doing, however, he mistook it forthe Canella Alba, and gave the account of the fructification ofthat plant. Murray, in his Linn. Syst. Veg. gavethe generic name Winter a, which he preferred, to the originalLinnaean one, and finally De Candolle has adopted the name ofFoster, in imitation of Lamarck.
