An ancient legend tells us that the Yellow Emperor, while at war in about 2600 BCE, lost his way when his enemy caused a dense fog to descend on his troops. In order to avoid this ever happening again, the Emperor invented the 'South-Pointing Chariot' so that his troops would always be able to find their way when they were on the march. The chariot pre-dated the magnetic compass and used cogs and gears to maintain a constant orientation.
