Time was gentle with this beautiful entrance door, and nature provided plenty of green foliage and red flowers. Campos, Chios Island, Greece.

Time is on our side. Time was gentle with this beautiful entrance door, and nature provided plenty of green foliage and red flowers. South of the city lies the fertile plain of Chios known as Campos, overgrown with citrus orchards and vineyards. Campos has a lot of groundwater, but also the most fertile soil of Chios. It is full of estates and summer residences of the old aristocratic families of Chios. 18th and 19th century travelers have described the beauty of this place in every detail. Walking through the streets of Kampos, one is impressed by its two-storey and three-storey mansions. Made mainly of two-colored incense stone with ocher and earthy reddish color, they are surrounded by high stone walls and gates with arched entrances. Campos was started by Maona, a Genoese trading company, most of whose members belonged to the Justinian family. They had taken over the financial resources and trade, but also the protection of the island from various enemies and local lords around the 14th century. It is estimated that once there were around 200 estates, but few survive today from the mansions of the first period. Today many mansion owners take care to restore them to their original form, the first or the second phase after 1881.
