Nagasaki Port was once the only door open to foreign countries during Japan's isolation during the Tokugawa Shogunate. Dutch traders, and to a lesser extent Chinese, were allowed a small contingent during this period to keep trade alive with the rest of the world, where western science was allowed to sneak into Japan, and thus Nagasaki played a major role in the modernization of Japan.
