Operative surgery . rieoseveins into the general eircuhition, after which the vas deferens and the arterycan be easily isolated and separated from the veins. If the patient thenassumes an erect position, the veins will again becotne distended ; afterwhich, if pressure be maintained npon the cord at the external ring by anyeffective agency, the vessels can be distinctly outlined with the patient placedagain in the recumbent position. The operator having thus carefully iso-lated the vas deferens and the artery, the patient can be etherized and theoperation performed. The Compression witli Pins (Fig. 145G).—Compression with pins con-sists simply in passing a strong pin through the scrotal tissues in front ofthe vas deferens and the artery and behind the varicose veins, and throwingaround its protruding extremities, so as to include the tissue in front, anelastic ligature, or cotton yarn, drawn sufficiently tight to cut off the circu-lation. This procedure should be repeated at a distance of about one inch.
